As many of you maybe aware a SAOC trip to Cannes has been planned for this September to commemorate the launch of the Alpine at this wonderful South of France location on the 2nd July 1959.
We have chosen for this commemorative event the weekend of September 5th and 6th 2009 as this will offer slightly cooler conditions for both drivers & Alpines & in addition the costs will be cheaper for those attending, rather than if we hold the event on the actual anniversary date.
To allow participants to tailor the event to meet their own preferences the organising group have concentrated on making the commemorative weekend their focus, allowing those wishing to attend the chance to choose their own routes to Cannes, the duration of their trip & their choice of travelling in small groups or individually.
Several SAOC members have already expressed an interest in joining the event on the Club’s forum & it is particularly encouraging that Alpinists from Germany, Austria, Holland as well as France have expressed their intention to be a part of the celebration, hopefully making it a truly international event. (bet they never thought that this would happen fifty years ago?) A varied program has been arranged to keep those who attend entertained.
An informal gathering will be held on the evening of Friday the 4th of September so that we may all meet up, exchange our tales of the trip down to the South of France and eat a little supper before communicating any last minute changes for Saturday’s events to all participants.
On Saturday morning we shall gather approximately 15 km from Cannes in the pretty village of Opio
The meeting point we have chosen happens to be just across the road from the 'English Mechanic’, a family business run by a Rolls Royce trained engineer. They deal exclusively in classic British sports cars and have offered practical support for the event and will hopefully be available over the weekend in case of serious repairs being needed. Details of services they can provide will be posted here closer to the time we are to travel.

Perched some 300 meters above sea level Opio nestles in the beautiful San Peyre Hills and shall be the starting point for an interesting and scenic drive through real Alpine country to the beautiful mountain top village of Gourdon. We will stop for lunch in the village where there is a good selection of restaurants to suit all tastes with superb views over the Cote d'Azur.
Gourdon is a well known beauty spot with spectacular views and some really pretty roads perfect for Alpine driving. At approximately 6pm we shall all gather for the formal part of the celebrations and proceed on the anniversary Drive Out to Cannes centre, with Alpines leading the way west along the famous Croisette, turning at the eastern end and then proceeding back to the gardens of Le Grand Hotel.
We will arrive at about 7.30pm and we are hoping that a photographer from one of the classic car magazines will be present to record the event, if not, we will look into getting someone ourselves, as this will be an historic, never to be repeated in our time, event.

After welcome drinks from a bar which is to be set up for us, we shall then proceed across the Croisette (on foot) to the beach restaurant which this night will be exclusively for the use of those of us attending the 50th anniversary celebrations for a four course meal and wine.
Cars may be left at the hotel overnight at the owners risk as although there have never been any problems in the past with vehicles parked at the hotel neither they or the club can guarantee security all night. We suggest that you toss a coin to decide a designated driver and take your cars back with you that night. On Sunday morning all Alpines left at the hotel will need to be removed from the gardens by 11.00am so that the hotel can prepare for their next event.

Sunday morning for those who have not succumbed to the previous night frivolities there will be another drive out into the mountains and possibly a visit to Grasse. We will finish our group events with a lunch at a traditional Provencal restaurant which has the benefits of a large car park and a really good menu that may even defeat the most gluttonous of Alpinists before saying our goodbyes and heading home or maybe, for some, continuing their stay to further explore the region. As you will be aware the South of France is a rather exclusive part of the world with more often than not prices to match.
For this Historic occasion we have managed to negotiate some very preferential terms for the Anniversary Dinner at Le Grand Hotel which will be the land mark event for this Anniversary Run. All of the meals on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday which have an estimated cost of 20 / 25 Euros per head / per meal and which are to be paid for on the day are optional with the exception of the Saturday Evening meal at Le Grand Hotel.
The Celebration Dinner will start with a Special Champagne Reception in the Hotel gardens where our Alpines will have pride of place. We will then move to Le Grand’s exclusive shore line restaurant and beach where we shall partake of a special four course meal complete with wine at a cost of 60 Euros per head. The beach restaurant will be for the sole use of our party and provide one of the highlights of our trip. As we need to confirm numbers as soon as possible we shall be putting a booking form on the Club’s web site on the 1st of March and would ask for you to return your form with full deposits before the end of April as we have many things to book. We would also be grateful if you could also indicate on the form if you would like to join in the other meals so that we may make reservations at the restaurants concerned and possibly negotiate some further discounts. A list of local Guest houses, small hotels and camp site are to be put on this web site by the end of February to assist you in planning your stay as will the drive out guides for the weekend. The format of this event will allow you to do as much or as little as you wish with the group, however experience suggests that you can’t beat travelling in a large group of Alpines as any regular National attendee will confirm. The only compulsory cost for the weekend is for the space on the display at Le grand Hotel and the never to be forgotten Anniversary Dinner.
